The firm’s letterhead exists — as the print PDF from the rebrand or the new named partner. The letters go out in Word. Here’s how firms bridge that gap without a designer on retainer and without the shared file that keeps breaking.

Why does the firm’s Word letterhead keep getting wrecked?

Because the artwork is reachable. In most hand-built files the design sits in the editable layer, so every engagement letter, demand letter, and representation letter is a chance for someone to nudge the logo or delete the footer — then the mangled version gets saved over the good one and multiplies. The fix is structural: artwork in the header layer can’t be selected at all while anyone types.

Does the letterhead file leave the firm’s hands?

Not here. The sample renders locally in your browser — the letterhead file isn’t uploaded. Paying sends up only the rendered artwork; the .docx is assembled in memory, streamed back, and never stored. No account, either. Compare that with emailing the brand package to a freelancer, or feeding it to a free converter site with unknown retention.

How does a firm set this up?

Once, in about two minutes, from the file the designer already delivered. WordLetterhead turns the PDF (or PNG or JPG) into a .docx with the design locked in the header at 300 DPI, on Letter or Legal:

  1. Upload the letterhead the firm already has.
  2. Drag the typing area where letters should sit — it becomes the margins.
  3. Download the .docx and circulate it as the firm’s letter file.

The design repeats on every page, prints at full strength by default, and the standard first-page-only layout is already configured. Opening a new firm? The launch-list version is here.

Common questions

Will it behave the same on every attorney’s machine?
Yes. The lock is standard .docx header behavior — part of the format, not an add-in — so the file works identically in Word 2016 and newer on Windows and Mac, including the office machine that hasn’t been updated in years.
We added a named partner. What does updating cost?
Have the designer update the artwork, then rebuild the Word file from the new PDF — two minutes and $9, same as the first time. No subscription, no per-seat licensing, no waiting on a freelancer’s queue.
Can we get it on Legal-size paper?
Yes — Letter, Legal, A4, and custom sizes are all included. The typing area you drag becomes the margins for the size you pick, so pleadings-adjacent documents and standard letters can each get their own file.
Is a confidential letter safe to type on this file?
The letter never touches our servers — it’s typed in your copy of Word, in your file. WordLetterhead only ever sees the letterhead artwork itself, and only if you buy the clean file; the sample doesn’t upload anything at all.
